Escadas super versáteis :: The super versatile stairs

{Scroll down for English}

Oh I love these two step stairs so much!!!
They are so versatile! One minute they help us reach to the highest places. The next minute, they easily embellish a little corner, (such as in here and in here).
In another moment, they can also serve as an extra seat, when there are more people in the house, than chairs available.
And some other time, they might also become a snack table for the little one in the house...

And remind me of our old primary school chairs...

O meu primeiro jejum :: My first fasting

A minha missão estava cumprida.

Sim. Porque não?

*********************

Living on this side of the world, at this time of year, is very special. June was Ramadan Kareem (Generous Ramadan), this year - The most important time of the year for Muslims, and about which I knew very little.

Very briefly, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, pray more intensely, abstain from all carnal pleasures and are more generous to others around them. There is a very intimate and personal relationship between them and the divine. Their personal motivation is impressive to witness.

The fast is broken, in community, with the Iftar. Tradition dictates that it might start with 3 dates and a glass of water. It's a moment of great joy and satisfaction, followed by a huge banquet, with various delicacies, through the night, culminating with the Suhoor, the last meal, before sunrise.

For non-Muslims, what happens here, at this time of the year, is a bit... awkward. And it can even be, frustrating, sometimes.

So when we live in a world so different from ours, why not put aside our Western frustrations, and embrace the richness of the local culture, to get a better inside on how's to be a Muslim, for a day?
The challenge that Hyatt Plaza, launched to the non-Muslim community, on last Wednesday's newspaper, hit me like an arrow.
Yes. Why not?

The charity event, is on its 7th edition. And for each registration, Hyatt Plaza, donated 200QR to encourage orphan children education in Somalia.

My curiosity was significant, but when I discovered that, just by fasting, I could be contributing to the improvement of someone else's life, I did't need any other motivational factor to put my name down, as well as my husband's and aunt, (who is visiting).

I had my last meal, on Friday night, and start eating and drinking again, on Saturday's Iftar, organized by Hyatt Plaza. In total I was fasting for 21h (normal is 16h/17h, but we were too lazy to get up for a snack, before sunrise).

The physical effects? I felt more tired and irritable than usual, I went to bed with a massive headache (but I'm not sure if due to fasting or to the match result between Portugal and Austria...).
I really missed my morning coffee, and only bear thirst, because I haven't left home all day, to avoid sun/heat exposing.

On the other hand, I felt a great pride when the clock struck 18:30h, that afternoon. My mission was accomplished.  I pushed my limits for a good cause. And at the end, it was not so difficult as it might seem. Control. It's all about control.
Then, breaking the fastin community, has a completely different meaning. We all had a smile on our faces, as we savored our three dates. We did it! We did it! - We all thought in unison.

Fasting is fairly difficult. It requires a deep will power. But it surely purifies us in a certain level. Lucky people, like us, know that at the end of the fasting day, there will be plenty of food and water. It's just a matter of hours.
However, there are areas in the world, where this is not an option. There is a huge gratitude implicit in the whole process.
I'm very pleased with my participation in this event. It was very good to connect with my Muslim brothers and sisters, and experience what they feel, also because there isn't really other way to know, if we don't try it.
Now, next year I'm planing to put my name down the list, once again, very proudly. And perhaps fast the whole month of Ramadan.
Yes. Why not?
