Tea time!

A dear friend of mine came in for a visit this week.

How do we welcome someone that special?
With an equally special afternoon tea, of course!

Cranberry scones with homemade butter and strawberry jam and a good and authentic English tea.

(It's always such a pleasure to see you, my dear friend!)

Ingredientes:

- 500gr de farinha com fermento;
- 50 gr de açucar;
- 110gr de mateiga;
- 300 ml de leite;

Ingredients:

- 500gr of self raising flour;
- 50g of caster sugar;
- 110gr of butter
- 300ml of milk;
- Cranberries (at your discretion).

Mix (with your hands) very well, the flour, the sugar and the butter, at the end, add the cranberries.
With a wooden spoon, open a whole in the middle of the dough and add the milk, mix very carefully from the edges to the center, as soon as it's combined stop mixing or you'll squash out all the air.
Transfer the dough to a clean surface, sprinkled with flour, flatten it a little bit, and cut out with a round cutter.
Put it on a baking tray for about 20 mins at 180º (this will always depend on your equipment).

O meu mini-jardim - My mini-garden

****************************************************

When we're single, we used to live in a single bedroom apartment, but in return we comforted ourselves with the huge terrace with flower beds all around, where we've grown our own: carrots, onions, garlic, lettuce, tomatoes, and herbs for the whole season. The barbecues made there were a delight, both for us and for our friends ...

Our current home perfectly matches the needs of the present, but has a small balcony, of about 70cm (in the wider area...), I'd been lamenting myself since we moved in, simply ignoring its existence...
Until now, that I've finally made peace with the architects and designers who "wisely" designed this residential area... and decided to do the best I could with it...

I was desiring to feel the healing power of the soil so much! Therefore have been delighting myself every day, as well my son... Oh yes, he is!!

Lesson: "There is never a small balcony to our wide horizons!"

Receita iogurte caseiro :: Homemade yogurt

One of the images I frequently have from my childhood is my mother's old yogurt machine, I looked at it and repeatedly asked: "mum, how long does it take?"
I liked those yogurts so much, that it didn't take long for me to recover the tradition of my lost memories.

Today we had homemade yogurt for breakfast, strawberry and oatmeal for us, and banana with oatmeal for Salvador.

I leave you the recipe to try, spoil, or surprise your family with this simple, but surely significant sign of love.

Ingredientes:

- 1 l de leite;
- 1 iogurte natural;
- 50 gr de leite em pó;
- 50gr de açucar (eu uso mascavado);

Ingredients:

- 1 l of milk;
- 1 natural yogurt;
- 50gr of powder milk;
- 50gr of sugar (I use brown sugar);
- a pinch of vanilla powder.

Put all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a simmer (should not reach more than 50 ° C), stirring with a whisk for 5 mins.
Smother the saucepan very well for 13 hours - as much smother the saucepan as better will be the yogurt's consistency (I use 2 polar blankets).

And it's ready to eat.
For diversity you can add different kind of fresh fruit, as well as dried fruit, granola and oats, your imagination is the limit.

Como fazer um caixote de madeira - How to make a wooden crate

I was using a Plant Pot to store my wrapping papers and wallpaper leftovers, but due to its weight, was constantly falling down...
A wooden crate was a good solution, but wasn't height enough to solve my problem...
EUREKA, then! - Making my own wooden crate couldn't be that difficult?! (And it's not as you're about to discover).

This won't certainly be the last wooden crate that I'm going to make; first because I love them, second because they offer a trendy way to store everything we want to, and third because they're incredibly simple to make.

My tutorial to create your own wooden crate:

- 12x40cm - wood slats - for the larger front

- 8x30cm - wood slats - for the narrow laterals
- 7x30cm - wood slats - for the base
(I've tightened the base so that my rolls didn't fall down)

* I used 15mm because when overlaping two wood slats they wouldn't be noticed and aren't too strong to the point of chipping the wood.

1. Faça dois quadrados com a ajuda dos pregos, como indicado na imagem;
1. Make two squares with the nails help, as indicated in the picture;

2. Adicione mais duas ripas de madeira ao meio;
2. Add two more wood slats in the middle;
quadrados, que fizeram anteriormente;
3. Nail the base and the laterals to the two squares, you've made before;
4. Depois é só pintar, e está pronto!
4. Then paint, and  it's ready!

5. Eu adicionei ainda alguns autocolantes para proteger o chão.
5. I've additionally used a few stick-on floor protectors.

Please bare in mind that, you can make endless variations of it, in terms of height and other measurements that best fulfill your needs.

Sementes germinadas - Germinated seeds

I'm so happy!
5 days later, my beautiful seeds (a talked about them here) germinated!
These are the cherry tomatoes:

My biggest concern were however the strawberry seeds, as from past experiences I realized that they're very sensitive and shy...
The seller man told me that I could sow them directly in the exterior on a plant pot, but I followed my instinct and decided for the mini greenhouse (mandatory for everything, from now on).
They might not have the same appearance of the previous pic, but I can already see small germinations here and there (can you too?).
Probably not all will be successful, but I will be very pleased to transplant those that triumph.

One of my uncles, who is a farmer by profession, had in recent days an health problem which could have been extremely severe on him...
During the conversation we had while I was visiting, he told me: "You know, I was very close to lose my freedom... and I still want to do so much... we plant something and then fall in love with it, want to go there to see how is it, is it growing healthy, or needs any kind of help...

Probably due to this deep passion he developed with and for the land, his improvements were incredible.

Today, when I unveiled my mini greenhouses, I felt so close to his words!
A seed really turns into a child of ours.

There are many pretty, exceptional and practical ways to keep our ribbons organised.
I chose a hanger to keep mine on place.

My solution requires very little DIY (as you can easily testify), and totally fulfills the role.

Semear - Sow

"Sow today to reap tomorrow".

I'll never stop dreaming about our modest home in the countryside, which the most desired requirement is a small garden to grow our own organic vegetables, totally free of any chemicals, (as happens with everybody, in my ideal of the perfect world).
But while my dream is just a dream, I am content with my potted seeds...

March was the month to sow strawberries and cherry tomatoes.
I am so excited to see these little beauties germinate!

Until then I'll be babysitting my seeds. This year, I wish to compete with my dad!

Maionese caseira - Homemade mayonese

*****************

One of the things I've, probably, purchased once or twice, for a very specific occasion, was the mayonnaise.
Mayonnaise is so simple and quick to make that (at least to my eyes) it's, just not worth to buy in supermarkets.

With no preservatives, sugars and other additives, it takes less than 5 mins to make.

Do que precisamos para fazer maionese:

- 1 ovo e uma pitada de sal;
- 3/4 copo de óleo;

What do we need to make mayonnaise:
- 1 egg and a pinch of salt;
- 3/4 glass of oil;
- A hand blender with the respective measuring cup.

To the egg and salt, add very slowly the oil to the mix, and it'll immediately emulsify to mayonnaise.

Keep in the fridge (I use the same exp date that comes in the egg carton that I've used).

O limão e as mãos - The lemon and the hands

I've got to confess that I am the worst "stepmother" that my own hands could have.
But if to my frumpy routine, we join some extra activities, like from the last days, the case further worsens...

In one of those eureka moments, that we all have, occurred to me to use some lemon juice, and guess what? My hands immediately started to shine!

Mother Nature truly always has a solution for everything, doesn't she?

If you haven't tried it yet, do not hesitate to do so, you'll instantly notice the difference, the skin becomes much more smooth and brighter.
