O plano E* - The E* plan

A week ago the weather wasn't inviting to do much more than being in the cozyness of our home - strong winds, heavy rain, greyish sky...

Personally I have nothing against these Winter days, maybe because I easily find a world of endless distractions within my four walls, but mainly because, having being raised in the countryside, I know how important the rainy days are for life's blooming - "Look! It's gold falling from the sky! " - I used to heard older people say, as a child. This expression caused my mind some confusion, but I realized its meaning as I got older...
So the Winter is really a very necessary "bad thing".

I have to agree though, that so many consecutive days of confinement, have caused my child, eager  for knowledge, enough annoyance to stop enjoying each and every one of his toys. What led me to have to use the plan "E", meaning *emergency and service stairs (in Portuguese stair = escadas). I know ... it's a bit ridiculous, but believe me, it works!

At our house's door opening, he starts to smile , at the service stairs door opening, he not only smiles but also balances is body, at the climbing up the stairs, he smiles, balances his body and makes funny noises of satisfaction.
After half an hour of climbing up and down the stairs, opening and closing doors to see where they lead to, he returns home a happy little man... and ready for a good " disinfection "!

Como aplicar papel de parede - How to apply wallpaper

********************

This week-end was, (almost entirely), dedicated to DIYing.

Initially, we thought that the second larger room of the house would be the best for Salvador, as he'd have plenty of space to play. The reality, though, is that ninety percent of his time is spent with us. And the non enjoyment of that, extra space, in its fullness, was causing us two "problems": On one hand, the room wasn't cosy enough; on the other hand my atelier / guest room / and playroom, too, was becoming too small... Therefore we, delightedly, embraced this task of moving Salvador to another room.

The behind the scenes images, that I prepared for this post, intended to be, a kind of tutorial, for your eventual projects.
You've got to cheer up, as this task won't cost you much more than 120€, and you'll surely have plenty of fun getting your hands dirty!

Antes e depois
Before and after

The material that I used to get the romantic look (baby boy version), that I love so much :

Ter em atenção:
1. A tinta para madeiras, deve ser própria para quartos de crianças;
2. Os vários rolos de papel devem ter o mesmo batch number (ver imagem abaixo)- que assegura a mesma tonalidade de cor;

Be aware of:
1. The wood paint, must be children's friendly;
2. The wallpaper rolls to be used, must have the same batch number (see picture below) - it ensures the same color tone;

3. The wallpaper adhesive must be adequate to the wallpaper you'll use, there is wallpaper adhesive to apply on walls, and another to apply on the wallpaper itself (see picture below)look for the symbol in the wallpaper label.

Passo 1 - Ripas de madeira
Step 1 - Wood slats

1. Medir e marcar, a lápis, a altura a que se querem colocar as ripas de madeira, (eu coloquei a 1,20m);
1. Measure and mark, with a pencil, the height you wish the wood slats to be (I measured 1,20m);

2. Cortar as ripas de madeira.
Para os recantos, vão precisar de cortar ângulos, mas é fácil com a ajuda da caixa de corte angular;
2. Cut the wood slats.
For the corners, you'll need to cut in angles, but it's easy with the mitre box help;
3. Colar as tiras de madeira na parede, à altura definida, com a cola extra forte;
3. Apply the express glue to the wood  slats, and those to the wall, at the set height;
4. Colocar a fita de pintura, ao longo da parte superior das ripas de madeira (por baixo não é preciso porque se irá cobrir com o papel de parede);
4. Place the masking tape along the top of the wood slats (there's no need to do it below because later will be covering it with the wallpaper);

5. Pintar as ripas (eu dei três demãos, porque não apliquei qualquer tratamento à madeira);
5. Paint the slats (I appplyed 3 coats, because I haven't used any undercoat);

Passo 2 - Papel de Parede
Step 2 - Wallpaper

1. Pincelar a parede de cola;
1. Brush the wall with the adhesive;
2. Aplicar o papel de parede (começando num dos extremos da divisão) acertando com o anterior - após a primeira tira ser colocada. Convém deixar sempre uns centimetros acima da ripa de madeira, para evitar falhas de corte;
2. Apply the wallpaper (starting from the far corner of the room) setting with the previous - after the first strip is applied, it is appropriate to leave a few centimeters above the wood slats, to avoid cutting faults;
3.  Cortar o papel à volta das eventuais tomadas;
3. Cut the wallpaper around eventual plugs;
4. Cortar o papel;  em cima e em baixo;
4. Cut the wallpaper at the top and at the bottom;
5. Take the masking tape, and it's ready!

Atualizar as cortinas - Curtains update

When Salvador was born one of the gifts he received, was this lovely bunting flag with different Laura Ashley fabrics, (I'll leave the link here, as it's well worth, making a virtual visit).

I knew immediately that I would do something unique with it, but while the idea didn't arise, that adorable  beauty was left alone glued to the wall ...

Last week, while accommodating Salvador into the baby carrier, to go out for a "run", I looked out to the window and saw in that very moment it's fate.
The curtains were simply blue - so if I would apply the bunting in the curtains - a Yin Yang could happen

This kind of technique is very interesting, because it allows differentiation and customization of a standard element in the market, made in a simple way.

A primeira comida preferida do meu filho - My son's first favorite dish

Quem diria?

Aí se o Gary soubesse!!

Usually at least once a month I prepare some chicken pies and other type of savories, to have always on hand in my freezer.

This week I tried a new recipe inspired by Gary's from Australia's Masterchef  (recipe here) - but I used minced beef instead to facilitate Salvador's swallowing.

Here at home our dinners become progressively lighter, as our growing intolerance for heavier dinners, increased...

To the irreplaceable bowl of soup joins a savory dish, or a spanish tortilla, or a wrap, or a mozzarella salad, or a slice of quiche ... and so on ...

It turns out, that Gary's Beef Pies are apparently, my son's very first favorite dish!
Who, would say that?

If only Gary knew...

Dia Produtivo vs Vida Produtiva - Productive Day vs Productive Life

Deceive yourself, if you're one of those people, who thinks, that having a productive day, with a baby around us, 24/7, is easy peasyAnd from what I heard, the challenge is about to increase every day...

To make my life a bit easier, I keep every room "trapped " with things that I know he likes to explore:

In my atelier for example,  as he likes to open a particular drawer, and some boxes, I put inside few strips of old fabric, used wrapping paper, and enough strings, ribbons and bows - while he entertains himself pulling and shaking all of that, I can "bring to light some ideas"...

In our bedroom, I "hide" underneath a watch box, old brochures, magazines and cheap advertising that arrives every day to our mailbox, cause I know he'll be going right there, looking for something - while those sheets are pulled out, crumpled and scrapped I find myself time to make the bed, dress up or tidy up the clothes...

In the kitchen , my biscuit cutters box and the kitchen cloths drawer, are the ones that save the dinner on the table, most of the times...

There is however, an interesting dichotomy in all of this - Although my days are becoming less productive, I have this feeling that my life has never been so productive.

Desculpem-me, agora, tenho trabalho para fazer...
Excuse me, now, I have some work to do...

French Crepes

Crepes...
Adoro crepes!

Pizzas? Pastas? Gelatti

Crepes...
I love crepes!

They became part of my recipe range for "welfare enzymes replacement", 9 years ago - time of my Erasmus, in Italy.

I learned how to make them with my roommate, A.
We used to make crepes matinees, as well as, long soirées, where suddenly we began to talk about anything... Unbelievable confessions, under a plate of crepes with Nutella - occasionally accompanied by a spirit drink...

Pizzas? Pastas? Gelatti
Sure, also. But OMG, how many crepes have we ate!!!

It was an affordable treat to our meager savings, and personally, it helped me to bear the boyfriend longing (and exponentially increase my weight), and A... I can't tell you...

Today, I really needed my dose of crepes...

Ingredientes:

- 1 ovo;
- 1 caneca de leite;
- 1 caneca de farinha;
- 1 pitada de sal;

Ingredients:

- 1 egg;
- 1 mug of milk;
- 1 mug of flour;
- a pinch of salt;
- butter - to butter up the frying pan

Mix the egg, the salt, the flour and only then the milk, little by little, (to avoid lumps).

Butter up the frying pan - some people, evolve the butter in the dough.

Cover the frying pan with the dough - just enough to cover the bottom (no one likes a very thick crepe!)

Garnish to taste, sweet or savory, there are numerous possibilities: just nutella, banana with nutella, spinach, ham and cheese (suggestion to a lunch box), etc..
With a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it's also an excellent, and quick dessert, for dinner with friends.

Then concentrate yourself in mitigate those... nostalgic feelings...
With a cappuccino perhaps?

Going Toddler - Tape I

Now that my son is a toddler it's time to start redesigning his bedroom in order to keep it up with his growth and constant developing needs.

I'm full of ideas!

But this is a task to be done leisurely, so I started slowly, by the easiest - those tasks that floated through my head and were just waiting to be materialized.

____________________________________________

Tissue box cover
Salvador's last hobby is taking out tissues from its box one by one, to then, tear them into pieces... To stop this behavior, I had to put the tissue box on the drawer dresser, (as well as the toiletries).
To make it part of the overall "decoration" I made this cover, using the same fabric that I chose for his layette.

Crib bumper head
When I made the crib bumper, I heard that for security reasons, it shouldn't be completely closed, therefore I decided to leave the head open.
Now the mattress was placed down, (also for security reasons, but from a different nature...) and SIDS danger is no longer relevant, so I've retouched and closed the crib bumper (as it was never so needed, to protect his head from the bars...)

Box up the "eternally pendings"
Each piece brings a memory, this task takes its time to digest...

Prepare grandparents frames - 12 months of Salvador
The hardest part is choosing the pictures...
This is the time when the digital age becomes a nightmare!

To be continued...

**************************************************

An element that I always have in my kitchen, is the aromatic olive oil.

Always ready, always handy!
I use it in many different occasions, but more often in my grilled dishes.
A simple grilled chicken breast, with one or two tablespoons of aromatic olive oil, goes to totally different dimension.

The aromatic olive oil placed in a nice bottle with a few loose strands of raffia and a pretty tag, can also prove to be one of your original homemade Christmas gifts, for example.
It's only a suggestion...

And how easy it is to make!

Ingredientes:

- 300 ml de azeite;
- 3 dentes de alho grandes;
- 2 folhas médias de louro;
- 2 malaguetas;
- 1 raminho de rosmaninho (eu hoje não tinha);

Ingredients:

- 300 ml of olive oil;
- 3 large garlic cloves;
- 2 medium bay leaves;
- 2 chillies;
- a bunch of rosemary (out of stock for me today);
- 1 lime (I used lime, but had previously used lemon and vinegar, and it's equally good, so it's up to you).

Put all the ingredients in a pan, except the lime, in a very low heat (very important!), until the garlic starts to gain a crust around.
When this happens the oil has absorbed all the flavors.
Remove then from the heat and squeeze the lime into the olive oil.

Chocolate Quente - Hot Chocolate (my way)

Questiono-me...

Desfrutem!

Every now and then, indulging ourselves with a delicious and creamy hot chocolate is just what makes our day, isn't it?

There are many reasons (or excuses) to drink an hot chocolate: making up for a bad day, fighting the cold weather, making a child happy...
I'm actually wondering... It must truly be a reason why not to have one?

This is my hot chocolate recipe.
Enjoy!!

Ingredientes (para duas pessoas):

- 250ml de leite;
- 75gr de chocolate de culinária;
- 200ml de natas;
- 2 gotas de sumo de limão;
- 6 colheres de sopa de açúcar;
- chocolate em pó;

Ingredients (for 2):

- 250ml of milk;
- 75gr of cooking chocolate;
- 200ml of cream;
- 2 drops of lemon juice;
- 6 table spoons of caster sugar;
- chocolate powder;
- gound hazelnuts (my special touch).

Heat up the milk and the chocolate up to, not more than 80ºC, until it's well combined.
Let it cool a little bit to get the perfect creaminess.

Meanwhile prepare the chantilly
Whip the cream with the lemon - In the transition from the "liquid cream state" to the "creamy cream state" add the sugar (one spoon at a time).

Serve the hot chocolate with the chantilly, and top it with some chocolate powder and ground hazelnuts for a beautiful experience and extra texture.

Will be waiting for your feedback.
